Product Review: Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer

Ever since I took interest on applying my eyeshadow I wanted an eye primer to go with it that does not break the bank. Every blog I read they are all raving about the UD primer potion but when I went searching for it online I almost fainted by how much it costs! I know, those who are fans of this primer will tell me it's worth every penny. I'm not arguing with you here heck, I'd make this my HG eye primer too if the world is not in recession.. :D The price for me is just too much. I had to find an alternative that comes close to the primer potion in terms of performance but would not cost me my arm. I did some research and came upon Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer. I've read great reviews on this on other blogs and since Etude House is already very much accessible here in the Philippines (no more online purchase and shipping fees!), I decided to try it out. I first went to their SM Makati branch only to find out they don't have the primer there so, I went home that day disappointed :( But, since I really have my heart set on it, I decided to go all the way to their store at SM Megamall to try my luck. This must be one of their bestsellers because when I got there, there are only a few boxes on display so I quickly grab on to one.

Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer
Price: P298 (approx. $7)
Place bought: Etude House store SM Megamall
(they also have other branches check out their website for store listings www.etudehouse.ph)

So, before I start my review, what exactly is an eye primer? Well basically cosmetic primers are what you apply to the skin to prepare it for a smooth makeup application. It could also help your makeup stays on much longer and help you achieve a flawless appearance. Eye primers, which in this case, helps even out the color of your eyeshadow and make it more vibrant. Putting on eye primer prior eyeshadow application could also prevent it from creasing and keeps it on longer. It is very important to choose the right primer that will for you and your skin type. In my case, I have very oily skin same goes with my eyelids. I have reviewed here before the K-Palette eyeliner pen with less than great results you could read the review here. Today, I'm going to test it out again but this time applying the Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer beforehand.
(Warning: you might feel nauseous from staring too much into my eye..haha!)

The primer has a built in applicator so make sure you don't share the applicator for hygienic purposes.

I just dab a bit of the product on to my lids (Make sure not to tug so much as the eye area is very sensitive and to prevent future wrinkles!). Then let it set for a while.

Then I lined my upper lash line with the K-Palette eyeliner pen. I applied this at 5:10 in the afternoon.

I also lined a bit of my lower lash line to see if it would also control this from smudging.

I took a picture again at 8:24 in the evening. I expected it to completely flake because I really have oily lids but what I got is just a minuscule creasing on the inner eye area.
Before washing my face and going to bed, I took another picture. A little flaking on the inner corner of my lid but the line is still visible and intact!
And the line on my lower lash line showed just a bit of smudging.

If you're gonna compare this to my review before without the primer, after just an hour, this eyeliner has already flaked on me but using the Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer, it stayed on up to more than 6 hours! Wow I'm truly impressed! :D

Using this primer under eyeshadow, you'll notice that the color is more vibrant and when I tested it on my eyelids, it even made the eyeshadow waterproof!

I am truly impressed with this product and will definitely buy more once this bottle runs out. But like any other products in the market, this may not work for other people so I'm glad it worked for me because now I have a reliable eye primer that I can easily purchase without burning a hole in my pocket!

So what's your favorite eye primer? Do share it with us! :D

Unexpected Surprise!

I have two cousins whose work is based in Dubai. One of them sent in a package last week containing different christmas gifts for different relatives of ours (typical Filipino custom-one for all, all for one..hahaha...). When I chatted with my cousin earlier this year, he told me he will be sending in a laptop bag for us..(Yey...laptop bag..appreciate it but not too ecstatic..hehehe..sorry cousin :D). So, when I finally got the bag, it was actually not bad, it was targus btw. But when I opened the bag, I was totally surprised! Aside from the usual soap and lotion "pasalubong" that goes with it, this greeted me with a big HELLO.

I totally did not expect this coming especially from a male cousin. The Brand is called Cheri Paris and is made in UAE. I'm not familiar with the brand and is actually hearing it for the first time but what the heck! It's got lippies and nail polish what more could I ask for? Hahaha...I hurriedly wanted to open it up but the packaging was tough to get through. After a couple of exertion, here's what's inside the box:

4 shades of sheer-glittery nail polishes and 6 mini lipsticks.

They were mostly in brownish shades but one stood out amongst the six.
This deep brownish-red one....

I've been wanting a deep dark red lippy, sort of like the deep reds classic hollywood celebrities wore back then. This one falls into the matte category which is perfect! (Still had to test if this will dry my lips). Here's a swatch of all six at the back of my hand.

I think two of them are matte and the other 4 have shimmers in them. Not bad. I could definitely mix and match this with other colors to come up with different shades. I felt like a girl with a new toy. I was definitely surprised! Thank You cousin Jorald!! :D

Etude House first purchase!!!

Here's  some Monday lovin' to all my curious kittens :D Yesterday, I attended the christening of my friend's son. As usual, I was asked to be one of the ninangs (my godchildren's growing in numbers by the minute!). The Christening was held in Binondo church and the reception was at the Original Savory Restaurant. I was so excited to see my godson for the very first time he's so cute and so chubby!! Aside from that, I'm also excited to visit Binondo. It was such a long time ago that I walked the streets of Manila. I had several checklists running through my mind but the main thing I wanted to do was look for fried siopao. I asked my friend and former colleague if she knew any good stall that sells them and she recommended Keean's fried siopao. So we headed there as per her instructions. Unfortunately when we got there we asked around and we were told they were closed during Sundays..bummer! Oh well, better luck next time! I decided to move along to the next item on my checklist:go to SM Megamall and visit Etude House. I was hoping to get my hands on EH's proof 10 eye primer and even looked for it at their SM Makati branch to no success. My Niece's high school graduation is coming up and I'll be doing her makeup. I'm hoping to use the eye primer on her so her eyeshadow would go on longer (let's see.. :D). So, together with a friend I haven't seen for a while, we headed over to Etude House. At first, we saw a vacant merchant space covered with the Etude House ad saying soon to open. I was confused since I know their SM Megamall branch is already open. Then we realized we were at Bldg. B, EH is located at Bldg. A (But what was that about? Are they planning to put up two stores at Sm MegaMall?hmmm...) Anyways, I think my heart did little somersaults when I finally saw the store's pink facade, finally I'd be able to buy the eye primer hopefully it's in stock! I quickly hurried over to the middle island and looked for it. There were just a few of it on display and I quickly grabbed on to one!hahaha...secured! Now on to browsing their other products! :D The store is jammed with customers making it hard to move around freely. I was hoping to avail of the auto liner pencil but I didn't see a pink nude shade that I was looking for. Next, I checked out the nail polishes. There were cute shades there and I decided to get me a pastel green one. I also saw a french manicure tip guide on their website and decided to search for it too. Bingo! Only one left! Got it! :D I wanted to try also their eye and lip makeup remover but they were OS. So many products to choose from but I really don't know what else I need at the moment so I decided to start first with what I got and just come back again. My friend got the blackhead remover dual sheet and I asked her if she could update me once she tries it out. At the cashier, i was told that I was only P48 short to a P500 worth of purchase to qualify me for a pink membership card. So she suggested I just get another nail polish and so I picked one in a pastel violet shade. Then I filled out a form and she gave me my card-woohoo! what a surprise! I also got a 2ne1 poster as a freebie( too bad I wanted a mini pen). Afterwards we did a couple more window shopping and ended our Sunday malling with a smoothie at Mondo Juice. I love their green tea smoothie..Yum! So, Let's see what's inside the bag...

Can't wait to try their nail polish and see if the pigmentation's okay. I'll also be posting my review of the proof 10 eye primer soon so watch out for that! Oh, and here's my pink membership card!

'Till next time Kittens!! :D

OIL of OLAY COLORMOIST LIPSTICK-285 BLUSH

Who knew Oil of Olay manufactures lipsticks? Yup, I was also taken aback by this during my daily ebay window shopping (or monitor shopping?). I did a double take on this particular product while I was browsing through the makeup section. As usual, I was curious to try it out. The price is affordable and is on sale for 5%OFF so yeah, I had to get it.

Oil of Olay Colormoist Lipstick-285 Blush
Price: P252.50 (approx. $6)
Place bought: Ebay.ph

The original Olay trademark can be found on the front part of the cap

Hence, the name of the shade, blush, this lipstick falls into the "natural" category that when you put it on, it hardly is noticeable and will just enhance your natural lip color. The formula itself could be a little waxy but completely okay. I have to admit I liked it the very first time I swept it on my lips but hated it a few hours later. It was an on and off relationship with this one :D But when I went back to this tube and started using it again, I did a complete 360. I used it on one of my night outs and what made me love this again is that I noticed it didn't dry out my lips after having it on for so many hours. And, when I passed by mirrors inside the mall, I liked the pinkish hue it gave to my lips...not bad. Another good thing about this lipstick is that it has SPF15 UVA/UVB Sunscreen properties so everything you need is already in one package you no longer need a separate lib balm to protect you from the sun's harmful rays (yep, I'm an SPF addict. better safe than sorry..). They also said that this is a rare find. Not too many people know about this so you could feel extra  "special" having this in your stash..haha!! Here's a picture of me wearing the Oil of Olay colormoist lipstick...

So, have you stumbled upon a rare find lately? I'd like to know! please share it with us :D

Kitchen Adventures: Birthday Cake from scratch!!

My Niece who's in 2nd year of highschool had her birthday last March 23. I wanted to give her something really special so I decided to bake her a cake. I have baked cakes before but that was soooo long ago and I used store-bought icing and candies back then. This time around, I wanted to make everything from scratch. I already had the type of cake in mind which is a new recipe-Strawberry carrot cake. I basically came up with this one because we had this jar of strawberry jam sitting inside the ref that nobody cared to touch so I decided to make something out of it so it won't go to waste ( I also have this knack for creating something out of what ingredients are available around the house this is due to watching door knock dinners on the food channel when I was young...familiar with this show? :D). I made that as my cake base and decided I'd do a special icing  I came up with just recently, again utilizing what ingredient is available. I have come up with a cream cheese icing dupe that is actually much more affordable. Now, I don't want to dwell on measurements in this post, because sometimes my experiments were made out of gut feelings meaning, I don't measure I just mix, mix, mix...haha! Making the icing was somewhat of a challenge also because I don't have a mixer. I incorporated air by mixing by hand( it's all in the wrist baby!! :D). Since my niece likes the color pink the cake has to be the same color. Initially I planned to just frost the whole thing and pipe in the borders but then I noticed the cake was crooked so I just decided to pipe icing on the whole thing. Well, the project did not disappoint me. Here's what the cake looked like (drumroll please...):

I forgot to tell you, this is just a mini cake I'm not yet that ambitious *wink. Now, problem is, I have no box to put this in! Guess I'd just have to come up with something.. :D

E.L.F. Eyebrow Stencil

I'm no eyebrow-shaping expert. Heck, I even overplucked mine thinking back in college that it would give me softer features (Still paying for my mistakes...). Just this year, I realized how much thicker eyebrows, my natural eyebrow by the way, suits me better. Well, I couldn't turn back time wishing I had never overplucked. So, while waiting for someone to discover a miracle formulation to restore eyebrow hair growth, my best bet is to fill them in and shape them using eyebrow powders. My favorite as of the moment is the Wet n' Wild Ultimate Brow kit which I have reviewed here before. As of now, i have been accustomed to shaping them freehand. Before, I had no idea how to make both brows symmetrical to one another or as to where my arch should be so I wanted my hands on some eyebrow stencils to help me out. As I searched through the Internet, I was surprised to see that a mere plastic stencil could cost so much!!! Until I discovered that E.L.F makes one that is so much more affordable. I checked out the E.L.F. counters hoping to purchase one but it's not available locally, darn it! :D My last resort was ebay. I searched through ebay.ph for the stencil and luckily, I found one! (an answered prayer!haha!). I immediately clicked the "buy now" button. A day after payment confirmation, I finally got it in my hands.

E.L.F. Eyebrow Stencil
Price: P130 ($1 thru the official E.L.F. website)
Place bought: Ebay.ph

According to the E.L.F. website: Achieve perfectly shaped brows to accentuate your face. The reusable stencil is easy to use and with 4 stencils: Curved Arch, Soft Arch, Structured Arch and Full Arch to choose from, it makes these brow stencils suitable for all brow shapes. Now your brows can look picture perfect everyday!

The stencils are not made of the usual acetate-type of plastic as I imagined it would be. It is actually made of a plasticky and rubbery material that would ensure you it won't tear when bended. The Kit includes enough eyebrow styles for me to choose from, I mean, do you really expect to buy a stencil that would exactly match your eyebrow shape? You don't. Stencils are just guides that could help you fill or shape your own eyebrows. You can either use the stencil's tail end, the front, or the arch, but not literally the whole stencil shape because it would come out unnatural and too structured. But it also depends if you chanced upon a stencil that fits perfectly onto your natural eyebrow hair growth, then that's fine. Stencil's are also great for those people who's shaping and plucking their eyebrows for the first time (the lucky ones :D). It could guide them on which hairs to pluck just simply put their desired stencil over their eyebrows and fill the shape in with white eyeliner pencil. Afterwards, anything that was not covered by the eyeliner can be removed. As for me, I may not have the need for this one at the moment but I would certainly lend this to my nieces when it's time for them to shape theirs. :D

Product Review: Ellana Flat Top Baby Buki Brush

I started my experimentation with mineral makeup way back in 2008. When I was on my 4th year in highschool, my skin started to act up and I break out like crazy! (blame it on teenage hormones). My skin is blemish prone so when I started working and had the means  I started exploring the options of trying out different cosmetic products. It is only in 2008 that I found out about Mineral makeup. I've tried other brands before but I found none of them worked for me. Then I stumbled upon this little booth at SM Makati on my way home from work. I've been hearing about ellana but never gotten around to try it (I was also getting frustrated on my search for the perfect mineralmakeup for me). I checked out their stuff, decided to try their mineral foundation and the rest they say, is history. Ellana was my saving grace. It literally helped improved my skin. I use to break out left and right using various brands of mineral makeup. After trying out their foundation, I decided to try their brushes. Since I go to work day in and day out, I wanted something that I could carry in my purse with ease. My first brush from Ellana is the Baby Buki brush and I was sold! I still use the same one from 2008 and it's still as soft as ever. Fast forward 3 years later, I decided to try yet another one of Ellana's brushes--The Flat Top Baby Buki Brush.

Ellana Minerals Flat Top BAby Buki Brush
Price: P400 (approx. $9)
Place bought: Ellana Weekend Stall at SM Makati

According to Ellana: This Flat-top kabuki brush has stiffer bristles with the same softest hair that can be used to give more coverage and an airbrush finish with your makeup.

As with any mineral makeup user, the trick is to buff the foundation onto the skin so it will look more natural and to give you better coverage. This brush will do that for you. The bristles are indeed stiffer than that of the baby buki brush only because this one is much denser than the former but definitely soft and not scratchy at all.

Please excuse the hazy shot. Just to give you an idea how dense it is.

This dense quality will give you more value to your mineral makeup because it doesn't permit the product to seep into the brush. Once you dip the brush into your mineral makeup, the product stays on top of the brush thus, putting more makeup onto your face rather than on the brush itself (less product wastage!). What I also love about this brush is that it's so small and compact, I can tote it anywhere with me.

It fits right in the palm of my hand!

Another great brush experience from my favorite Mineral Makeup brand. I'm hoping to try more of their brushes in the future specifically the Stippling brush, the angled blush brush, and the extra large buffer brush!

If you want to find out more about Ellana Minerals you could visit their official website www.ellanaminerals.com or visit their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ellana-Minerals/210493050258#!/ellana . For multiply.com users, check out their multiply account http://ellanaminerals.multiply.com/ . They offer free samples if you are interested to know which shades would best fit you, you just have to pay for a minimal shipping fee. (BTW, Ellana Minerals is proudly Filipino made.)

Kitchen Adventures: Peanut Butter-Cinnamon Empanadas!!

Hi Readers! (or reader..haha!) As you know, being the curious cat that I am, my interests does not only focus on beauty alone. I am also fond of doing little experiments in the kitchen. This is primarily due to the influence of my mom who used to make ME her little helper around the kitchen. Everytime she would try her new concoctions, she would call me to her side and teach me every trick up her sleeve. I did enjoy those bonding moments with my mom and I'd like to thank her for instilling it upon me. Aside from my mom, I'd like to thank my other mentors: Alton Brown, Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, and all the other chefs from my favorite cable channel-The Food Network. :D I basically became more interested in cooking because of these guys.

Anyways, before I even began cooking savory dishes, I have been pretty much into baking. I always find the smell of freshly baked breads comforting and calming. I like how you could already make many things with just a kilo of flour, sugar, yeast, eggs, and milk. My mind is always busy formulating new recipes...what could I do with this, what would happen if I mix this and that together...you know, those things.

As I also love peanut butter (I literally would eat it out of the jar like winnie the pooh but with a spoon and underpants..haha..) and cinnamon, I tried making something out of nothing. I was craving for some snacks the other day but could not find anything to munch on so, I decided to make these from scratch since I have some flour and some butter on hand.

So what I did first is to make a basic pie crust dough (so many recipes on the internet on this). I took a cup of flour and incorporated some chilled butter until it develops a coarse consistency. Then I added some cold water to help them stick together and then form it into a big ball. I wrapped it in cling wrap and let it rest inside the fridge. After atleast 30 minutes, I took it out, knead it and rolled it out flat and cut out circles big enough to house as much peanut butter you want, in my case, a big one!! I then put in the peanut butter, sprinkled some cinnamon and turned the dough over. Sealed the edges of the empanada and then sprinkled some sesame seeds on top.  I popped it inside the oven and baked it for like 30 minutes. And here's what it looked like after..

Of course I put some garnishes to make it more appealing to your eyes.. :D

And Here's what it looks like cut in half. just to show you the peanut butter filling..YUM!

This is a simple snack you could do at home. You can even make batches of the pie crust dough ahead of time and just stick it in the freezer for future use! Make different empanadas with different fillings whichever do you fancy. :D

So Have you also experimented in the kitchen lately? I'd like to know! :D

Product Review: Cinema Secrets White Eyeliner Pencil

Hey, Guys! I've been under the blogging radar lately mainly because I was, actually, I still am, busy with other projects. But I also have so many pending product reviews to share with my curious cats. :D

So, If you happen to stumble upon my previous posts and have been with me eversince this blog was born, you'd understand that this year is all about my eyes and how I want to put more emphasis on them in regards to makeup.

Back then, I was afraid of using white eyeliners. I thought they were so obvious and totally senseless. But as I grew older and began working, I understood and realized the perks of having this in your makeup arsenal. Lining your lower lashlines with white eyeliner will give you an instant lift from the "I didn't get enough sleep" look and will instantly brighten your whole face. But finding the perfect white eyeliner is both a hit and a miss process. I normally read through other blogs first before going out and actually buying anything as this curious cat is also a thrifty cat. I'd rather try a product already with a great following rather than buy something I never heard of especially if it falls on the expensive side. You wouldn't want your hard earned money go down the drain would you? So, reading on, I heard such rave reviews about the MAC white kohl pencil. But when I went to the MAC counters to check it out, it's always sold out and it also doesn't come cheap. Then, I stumbled upon a blog review of the Cinema Secrets eyeliners. I actually have tried this brand before and they are known for theatre makeups. They sell very pigmented concealers and foundations but I was never aware that they also have eyeliners until I read about them. Given the track record for high pigmentation, I was curious to give this one a try. Considering also, that this is way cheaper than the MAC white kohl (but I'd definitely still would like to try it out in the future). So on one of my trips to the mall, I made a stop at the Cinema Secrets counter.

Cinema Secrets Eyeliner pencil in White
(it also comes in other colors.)
Price : P223.00 (approx. $5)
Place bought: Cinema Secrets counter at Landmark Makati

As you can see, the pencil itself is quite long ensuring you that it'll last you for quite a long time. As usual, here's a shot of my bare eyes for comparison:

Here's what it looks like when the white eyeliner is applied

Pros:
  • Reasonably priced
  • Very pigmented. One swipe would give you the effect you want.
  • the formulation is not too creamy nor too hard which makes it glide easily on the waterline without hurting your eye.
  • color stays put for a good 3-4 hours depending on how frequent you tend to rub your eyes (a bad habit for some people. :D)
Cons:
  • I couldn't complain much about this product considering its functionality and affordability. Just that I wish the staying power could be longer.
  • Tends to create product build up on your tear ducts at the end of the day.

So, if you're on a tight budget but are on the look out for a great white eyeliner I suggest you try this one out. I'd probably won't buy this anytime soon since this product is long enough to last me a long time and I still do have my eye on the MAC white kohl. :D

Thank You Project Vanity!! :D

Okay, so did I mention I won Project Vanity's Beauty and Music Giveaway contest? Well, I did! I was so happy to have gotten a facebook message from Project Vanity herself, Ms. Liz Lanuzo. The contest was extended till the end of February when it caught my attention on her blog site. I saw what she was giving away and decided I'd have to join! She asked us to name a musician/artist which inspires us the most and tell her why we picked them. For me I picked Jennifer Hudson basically because I'm so amazed by her talent and it was incredible how she stood through all the challenges she has gone through losing her mother, brother and nephew in a tragedy. My heart reached out to her as I know how big of an impact losing one's mother is to a girl's life. Anyways, on a lighter note, we all agreed to meet up at the Coffee Bean and Tea leaf the Fort to claim our prizes (including the other winners of her Avon contest). It was nice because I've gotten to meet new people. We chatted about blogging, beauty, life, all and everything there is to know about each other.. :D Unfortunately, my prize wasn't with Ms. Liz (which I understand by the way) at that time so we agreed to pick it up at her condo instead. She was so nice and sooo..accommodating! I'm glad to have met her in person. I was so excited when I got home I immediately took a photo of my prize. I'll be doing reviews on some of the items below for all the curious cats out there so stay tuned :)

And here's a Souvenir photo of us pretty ladies!! :D Thanks again Ms. Liz for all our prizes! On to the next!

(L-R) Ms. Divine, Ms. Patricia, Ms. Liz, and yours truly.
Sorry, this was just taken with my sister's camera phone. :)

Product Review: Maybelline Eye and Lip Makeup Remover

I'm always on the search for the perfect mascara and I specifically like waterproof ones because I have oily lids which would give me raccoon eyes at the end of the day if I were to use regular non-waterproof types. Just as how much I love my waterproof mascaras, I also find removing it a big pain in the butt. Using petroleum jelly does the job. But I find it too time consuming to do. So, I was on the look out for the perfect eye makeup remover. Since most of my favorite waterproof mascaras come from Maybelline, I thought maybe their makeup remover is perfectly built to effortlessly remove those stubborn waterproof mascaras. I decided to give this one a trial run and bought the smallest bottle available.

Maybelline Eye and Lip Makeup Remover
Price: P99.00 (approx. $2.25)
Place bought: Maybelline counter (SM Bacoor)

Here's a shot of my eye wearing mascara:

Now, to remove eye makeup, use a piece of cotton pad and put an ample amount of the makeup remover (make sure you shake the bottle beforehand)

then, let it sit on the eye for a minute before gently wiping downward. Look at the image below, you can even see my lash lines on the cotton pad. Cool!

Here's a reference with one eye mascara-free :)

Likes:
  • Very affordable.
  • Gentle on the eyes even for contact lens users.
Dislikes:
None!

I'm lovin' this eye makeup remover because it works so well in removing the waterproof mascara! Now, I no longer feel lazy putting on mascara because I can always rely on this thing to do the tedious job. :D Have you also tried the Maybelline Eye and lip makeup remover? Let me know.
